Topic Codes
What are Topic Codes and why do you use them?
Topic Codes are letter(s) or number(s) attached to a URL to define a person’s interest in a specific topic. The client determines the taxonomy for assigning the codes and what ‘topics’ the codes are associated with. The topic codes not only write to the person’s profile in Email Marketing, but also write to their profile in the Unified Audience Database, so you can query all people interested in a specific topic.
Before you get started, make sure you have done your due diligence in organizing and managing your topics/taxonomy!

How do you set up Topic Codes?
To set up topic codes, you first have to set up the User Defined Field to capture that data (the UDF must be set up as a transactional UDF; name of UDF must be “Topics”). Then you will add “topic=” with topic codes in the query string when creating the content. Sample: <a href =”http://www.xyz.com?topic=1,2,3"> <a href =”http://www.abc.com?test=1&topic=a,b,c,d,e"> |

When a link in an email is clicked, the topic code is shown at the end of the URL:
